Vitamin D and Mom's-to-Be

The wonders of the "sunshine vitamin" - vitamin D - just never seem to cease. Now it appears that expecting mothers who don't have enough vitamin D in their system are more likely to have their baby via a Caesarean delivery procedure.

The study, done jointly by the Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine, examined 253 pregnant women. According to Dr. Michael Holick, an assistant professor of medicine said "pregnant women who were vitamin D-deficient at the time of delivery had almost four times the odds of Caesarean birth than women who were not deficient."

There are lots of ways to get this good stuff, but it's well known that the best is also the most pleasant: get plenty of plain, old sunshine. It seems that a nice walk around the neighborhood on a sunny day could work more wonders for moms-to-be than they could ever know.
